Mr. Tubb (Assistant Headteacher & Careers and Employability Lead)

  • Email: mtubb@stmaryscemiddle.uk

At St Mary's Middle school we value Careers Education and ensure that we offer a number of broad and balanced opportunities for our pupils to explore and learn from. We work closely with the Thomas Hardye School and other local middle schools in our aim to meet the eight Gatsby Benchmarks (please see the link below to find out more about these).

As well as incorporating Careers Education into our PSHE curriculum, we encourage students to explore various career websites that are specifically designed for children of middle school age. We feel it is important that we give students the opportunities to explore the vast array of careers and pathways pitched at a level they find appropriate and appealing.

To complement and develop this, we are planning to run a Careers Fair involving parents presenting their careers and the pathways they chose. If you would be willing and able to help out with this, please use the contact form on the Careers page below. This year, I will be looking to have one-to-one discussions with all students in Year 8 regarding their future aspirations and provide them with advice and places to go where they can find further information.

Thank you for reading,

Mr. Tubb.

The 8 Gatsby benchmarks

  • Careerpilot
This website can provide you with information on a huge number of careers, based on your responses to some simple questions.

  • Careerometer - Labour Market Information For All.
Careerometer can be used to explore and compare key information about occupations, help you learn about different occupations and identify potential careers. It provides access to a selection of UK headline data relating to pay, weekly hours of work and future employment prospects for different occupations, as well as description of the occupation. Simply type in the title of the job you are interested in and the widget provides a series of options from which you can select the most relevant to you. You can then look up another two occupations and compare. You can also select ‘display the UK average’ and compare the information with the occupation you have selected.

  • Career Insight Website
This website contains a huge database of videos explaining the routes that different people took to get into the career they wanted. These cover their journey from school, to further education and onwards into the wider world of work. It also covers what an average day is like for a person in that career. The database is fully searchable and is being added to all the time.
